Better Posture for a Healthier Back

The way you sit, stand, drive, lift, and even sleep can affect your posture and the health of your back. Over time, poor posture may contribute to back and neck discomfort. At South Texas Spinal Clinic, we encourage patients to be mindful of everyday habits that can help support proper alignment and reduce unnecessary strain on the spine.

Here are a few simple ways to improve your posture:

Strengthen supporting muscles. The spine is supported by two major muscle groups: the core, or abdominal muscles, and the paraspinal muscles, which run along the spine. Keeping these muscles strong through regular exercise can provide greater support for the spine and promote better posture.

Align your body. Much of the day is spent either sitting or standing, making proper alignment important. When standing, keep your body upright and your hips aligned with your back. When sitting, avoid slouching or leaning forward for extended periods.

Remember ergonomics. If you spend many hours sitting, pay attention to how your workspace and chair support your body. Sitting relatively upright and providing support for the natural curve of your lower back can help encourage better posture throughout the day.

Small changes to your everyday habits can make a difference in how you support your spine. If you are experiencing persistent back or neck pain, the specialists at South Texas Spinal Clinic can help determine the cause and recommend appropriate treatment options.
