What Is EMG?

Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic procedure used to assess the health of muscles and the nerves that control them. By measuring the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during movement, EMG provides valuable insight into how well your nerves are functioning.

Often paired with nerve conduction studies (NCS), EMG helps our experts detect nerve and muscle conditions that may affect mobility, sensation, and strength—especially when symptoms involve the back, neck, spine, or extremities.

EMG testing helps pinpoint the source of symptoms, such as:

  • Numbness, tingling, or pins and needles sensations
  • Muscle weakness or cramping
  • Radiating pain in the arms or legs
  • Suspected spinal nerve compression
  • Possible pinched nerves or nerve damage
