Know When It’s Time to See a Pediatric Orthopedic Doctor
Children and teens can experience bone, joint, and muscle problems that require specialized care. While some growing pains or minor injuries improve with rest and home care, ongoing or worsening symptoms should be evaluated by a pediatric orthopedic doctor or surgeon.
You should request an appointment if your child experiences:
- Pain lasting more than a few weeks without improvement
- Limping, difficulty walking, or avoiding physical activity
- Joint swelling, stiffness, or tenderness
- Noticeable differences in limb length or alignment
- Limited range of motion in the arms or legs
- Back, hip, or joint pain that interferes with daily activity
- Pain accompanied by fever, redness, or warmth near the joint
You may also need to see a pediatric orthopedic surgeon or doctor if your child has been diagnosed with or you suspect one of the following conditions:
- Scoliosis or spinal deformities
- Clubfoot or flatfoot
- Hip dysplasia
- Sports injuries or fractures
- Growth plate injuries
- Limb length differences
- Developmental orthopedic disorders
