Bone Health

Strong bones are the foundation of lifelong mobility and independence. With age or certain medical conditions, bone strength can decline—leading to osteoporosis, fractures, and decreased quality of life. At South Texas Spinal Clinic, our bone health program is designed to assess your risks, educate you on proactive strategies, and treat bone-related conditions using advanced methods to help keep you active, strong, and fracture-free.

Common Conditions

Healthy bones support stability, balance, and daily function. As we age—or due to certain health conditions—our bones may lose strength and density, making them more vulnerable to injury. At South Texas Spinal Clinic, we diagnose and treat a range of bone conditions, with a focus on prevention, early detection, and effective treatment to keep you active and healthy.

Osteopenia

Osteopenia is the early stage of bone loss, when bone density is lower than normal but not yet severe enough to be classified as osteoporosis. Many people with osteopenia have no symptoms, which is why screening and bone density scans are important. With lifestyle changes, targeted nutrition, and monitoring, osteopenia can often be managed and progression delayed.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis occurs when bones become fragile and brittle, increasing the risk of fractures even with minor falls or injuries. It is especially common in older adults and postmenopausal women, but it can affect anyone. Our bone health doctor and providers use advanced diagnostics to detect osteoporosis early and provide treatments that may include medications, exercise programs, and lifestyle guidance to strengthen bones and reduce fracture risk.

Fractures

Bone fractures can occur in the spine, hip, wrist, or other areas and are often linked to weakened bones from osteopenia or osteoporosis. These injuries may cause pain, limit mobility, and lead to long-term complications if not properly treated. At South Texas Spinal Clinic, we provide comprehensive fracture care—ranging from conservative management and bracing to advanced surgical procedures—paired with ongoing bone health strategies to prevent future breaks.

Diagnostic Services

Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective bone health care. At South Texas Spinal Clinic, we use advanced diagnostic tools to assess bone strength, detect early signs of osteoporosis, and identify fractures that may otherwise go unnoticed. Our services include bone density (DXA) scans, lab testing, and imaging studies that provide a clear picture of your bone health. These evaluations allow our bone health doctor and team to create a personalized plan for treatment and prevention, giving you the best chance at long-term bone strength and independence.

Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat painful spinal compression fractures, often caused by osteoporosis. During the procedure, a small balloon is inserted into the fractured vertebra to restore height and create space, which is then filled with bone cement for stability. This treatment can relieve pain quickly, improve spinal alignment, and help patients return to daily activities with greater comfort.

Treatment Options

At South Texas Spinal Clinic, our goal is to strengthen and protect your bones while addressing conditions like osteopenia, osteoporosis, and fractures. We provide both nonsurgical and surgical solutions, always starting with the least invasive approach and tailoring care to your individual needs.

Nonsurgical

Whenever possible, our fracture prevention doctor and bone health team focus on nonsurgical care to improve bone health. This may include medications to increase bone density, nutrition and lifestyle counseling, bracing or support devices, and preventive strategies to lower the risk of falls or injuries. Nonsurgical care often works hand in hand with physical therapy and other treatments to support long-term bone strength.

Surgical

When bones are significantly weakened or fractures have occurred, surgical intervention may be the most effective solution. Procedures such as vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty can stabilize spinal compression fractures and relieve pain. In more complex cases, surgical fixation with rods, screws, or plates may be necessary to stabilize the affected area. Every surgical plan is paired with rehabilitation and continued bone health management to reduce the risk of future injury.
